The Kuwaiti Progressive Movement Responds to U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick’s Blackmail Against Kuwait

The alarming statement made by U.S. Commerce Secretary under the Trump administration, Howard Lutnick, regarding Kuwait’s tariffs on the United States, represents a blatant and unacceptable act of American blackmail against Kuwait. This transparent attempt to pressure our country aims to undermine Kuwait’s relatively independent foreign policy. Most likely, this pressure is being exerted in response to Kuwait’s steadfast rejection of normalization with the Zionist entity, as well as to influence Kuwait’s contracts with the People’s  Republic of China in certain sectors—especially given that the U.S. Secretary, appointed by Trump, is known for his hostile stance toward China.

While we categorically reject this American blackmail, we reaffirm that Kuwait’s national interest necessitates a fundamental reevaluation of the current policy that relies on so-called Western security guarantees for Kuwait’s safety and independence. These guarantees have lost credibility, as demonstrated by events in Ukraine, Afghanistan, and elsewhere. Instead, Kuwait must prioritize reliance on a cohesive internal front based on popular participation, strengthen its national defense capabilities, uphold its unwavering national, pan-Arab, and humanitarian stance against normalization with the usurping Zionist entity, and focus on fostering balanced regional and international relations in light of the emerging multipolar global order.
